Design and process analysis of LED heat sink board

In LED lighting industry, the problem of heat conduction and heat dissipation is an important link in lighting design, in other words, if the design process, the heat conduction and heat dissipation problems are not solved, this product is likely to be a waste! Moreover, the problem of heat conduction is not solved, no   matter how big is the heat sink is useless. Therefore, I provide a train of thought for the heat conduction of the aluminum board for your reference.

As a particularly important thermal conductive material, aluminum board has special requirements during wiring. The following is the most commonly used power LED in the industry, have a discuss the way of heat conduction with copper foil

In the industry, the very general pattern of wiring is shown below,

fig1

The heat generated by LEDs, transmitted to the aluminum base only through the same large copper foil as the LED heat welding plate.

The sectional view is as follows,

fig2

If so, the thermal path can be explained in this way:

LED heat sink -- -- -- -- thermal conductive silicone -- -- -- --as big as heat sink copper foil --- -- -- --Dielectric-- -- -- -- aluminum plate -- -- -- -- the radiator

It can be seen from the figure that the thermal conductivity path from LED to aluminum base is just the same as the thermal sink

If we change our thinking, we will design the aluminum board as follows:

fig3

As we all know, the thermal conductivity of copper is much larger than it of aluminum, we design like this, increase the copper layer as more as possible  which connected to the pad of LED heat sink, spreading conduction heat rapidly in copper foil layer, next conduct to the lower aluminum base, artificially increased heat conduction path, will greatly reduce the temperature of the LED heat sink, extend the working life of the LED as much as possible.
